Pertamina Officer Leads Multinational Team in Algeria, Strengthening Indonesia’s Strategic Role in Global Energy Development

Jakarta, February 4, 2026 – Pertamina continues to reinforce its commitment to strengthening national energy resilience through strategic international operations, demonstrating Indonesia’s growing leadership in the global oil and gas industry. Through its subsidiary, PT Pertamina Algeria Eksplorasi & Produksi (PAEP), part of PT Pertamina Internasional Eksplorasi dan Produksi (PIEP) under Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, the company is advancing the development of key upstream assets in Algeria, driven by world-class operational standards and Indonesian leadership excellence.

Established in 2014 following the acquisition of ConocoPhillips Algeria Ltd. assets, PAEP represents a pivotal milestone in Pertamina’s international upstream expansion strategy. The acquisition not only diversified Pertamina’s global portfolio but also positioned Indonesia as a credible and competitive player in the international energy landscape.

As operator since 2014, Pertamina conducts oil and gas operations in partnership with Sonatrach, Algeria’s National Oil Company (NOC), within the challenging environment of the Sahara Desert. Operating under extreme geographical and climatic conditions requires robust operational discipline, uncompromising safety standards, and resilient leadership to ensure sustainable and reliable production performance.

Currently, 40 Pertamina officers are deployed at PAEP, undertaking cross-continental assignments that demand adaptability, technical expertise, and strong cultural intelligence. Working within a multinational workforce comprising professionals from Indonesia, Algeria, Spain, and Romania, Pertamina officers hold strategic leadership roles, overseeing operations, safeguarding workforce safety, and ensuring operational excellence aligned with international industry standards.

In mid-2023, Pertamina further strengthened its long-term commitment in Algeria through the extension of a hydrocarbon cooperation contract with Sonatrach and Repsol at the Menzel Ledjmet Nord (MLN) Field, Block 405a. This extension reinforces Pertamina’s strategic position in North Africa and provides a platform for continued asset optimization, production sustainability, and value creation.

“The trust placed in Pertamina to lead a multinational workforce and the continuation of our contract in Algeria reflect the global competitiveness, professionalism, and leadership capability of Pertamina’s human capital,” said Syamsu Yudha, President Director of PIEP. “This achievement underscores not only business performance but also Indonesia’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the global energy ecosystem.”

He added that operational success in Algeria is driven by the resilience and dedication of Pertamina officers operating in demanding environments. “Delivering safe, reliable, and efficient operations in extreme conditions requires unwavering commitment, discipline, and strong leadership. Our officers exemplify these values in fulfilling Pertamina’s mandate to support energy resilience.”

Despite operating far from the public spotlight, Pertamina’s team in Algeria continues to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable operations. From the heart of the North African desert, they demonstrate that Indonesia’s presence in the global energy industry extends beyond participation, positioning the nation as a trusted partner and strategic leader in international upstream development.
