PHR Confirms Hydrocarbon Discovery at Mustang Hitam-001 Well in Rokan Block

Pekanbaru -- PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) has confirmed a hydrocarbon discovery at the Mustang Hitam-001 (MTH-001) exploration well located in Libo Jaya Village, Siak Regency, Riau Province, within the Rokan Block working area. The confirmation follows a comprehensive evaluation of drilling and production test results, which verified the presence of hydrocarbons.

Prior to confirming the hydrocarbon discovery, a series of activities were carried out to analyze drilling operations. The MTH-001 exploration well was spudded on 4 September 2025 using the PDSI 52.3 rig with a capacity of 750 HP and reached a total depth of 6,464 ftMD (feet Measured Depth)/6,351.5 ftTVDSS (feet True Vertical Depth Sub Sea) on 26 September 2025. Geologically, the well is located within the South Aman Trough of the Central Sumatra Basin, one of Indonesia’s most productive hydrocarbon basins.

Following the completion of drilling, operations proceeded to the production test phase using the BMS-007 rig, which was conducted from 5 December 2025 to 3 January 2026. The test results confirmed the potential for oil resources from a new play associated with a stratigraphic trap within the Pematang Upper Red Bed (URB) Formation and the Menggala Formation in the South Aman Trough.

The results indicate potential for further production enhancement through phased development. The discovery also underscores the continued prospectivity of mature assets when supported by adopting new perspectives and optimizing data extraction—can still deliver promising results.

The Pematang URB Formation is recognized as a mature hydrocarbon source interval, while the Menggala Formation comprises sandstone reservoirs that serve as the primary oil-bearing units within the Central Sumatra Basin.

Vice President Exploration of PHR Regional 1, Suprayitno Adhi Nugroho, stated that this discovery provides a positive signal for further development potential in the Central Sumatra Basin. "The MTH-001 well has confirmed hydrocarbons within the Menggala and Pematang URB formations. While initial production rates remain modest, the discovery provides a solid foundation for further appraisal through well intervention and evaluation of additional untested intervals," he said.

Currently, PHR continues to conduct comprehensive studies on resource and reserve potential as well as development schemes. Estimates of resources and reserves are being determined through the integration of all subsurface data and test results.

PHR is currently undertaking an integrated subsurface evaluation to further assess resource and reserve potential and to define optimal development concepts. Resource and reserve estimates are being refined through the integration of drilling, testing, and subsurface data.

"The exploration and development teams are also preparing Early Production (POPE) scenarios to enable timely and value-accretive monetization of the discovery," he explained.

The MTH-001 well holds a strategic position, located approximately 3 km from Oki Field, 4 km from Kokoh Field, and 6 km from the Libo Gathering Station (GS). This proximity presents opportunities to leverage existing facilities and achieve development efficiency.

The successful discovery of the MTH-001 well reaffirms PHR’s commitment to conducting sustainable exploration activities in the Central Sumatra Basin and further strengthens the role of the Rokan Block as a backbone of national oil and gas production.

PHR remains committed to executing exploration and development activities in a prudent, data-driven, and safety-focused manner, supporting Indonesia’s long-term energy security and production objectives
