Strengthening Preparedness, Pertamina EP Bunyu Field Engages Community in Emergency Simulations

Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field successfully conducted a Major Emergency Drill at the Loading Terminal area on 29 December 2024, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM WITA. The exercise, which involved local communities near the company’s operational facilities, aimed to validate Emergency Response Plan (ERP) procedures and enhance the readiness of emergency response teams, including the Fire Brigade, Medical Team, Security Team, and the Site Emergency Response Team (SERT).

In addition to the drill, PEP Bunyu Field conducted a safety awareness campaign on 24 December 2024, covering evacuation routes, emergency contact numbers, and safety procedures. Participants included residents from RT 01 and RT 02 in Bunyu Selatan: RT 07, 08, 14, and 15 in Bunyu Barat, as well as Tagana emergency response teams from both areas. Senior Manager of PEP Bunyu Field, Despredi Akbar, emphasized the importance of this exercise as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to safety and preparedness. “Through this drill, we aim to improve the speed and effectiveness of our emergency response while fostering a shared culture of safety.”

The scenario simulated an oil spill from Tank T-01, triggered by operational error, which led to a fire sparked by local resident fireworks. Due to swift coordination, the fire was successfully extinguished within 45 minutes, and the area was declared safe by 8:56PM WITA. As per the scenario, one person sustained minor injuries and immediately received medical treatment at the PEP Bunyu Field Polyclinic.

Despredi expressed appreciation for all participants and reaffirmed PEP Bunyu Field’s commitment to operational safety as a national vital asset in oil and gas production. “Enhancing our preparedness for emergencies ensures collective safety and supports sustainable oil and gas production, which is crucial for national energy security and aligns with current government policies.” Moving forward, PEP Bunyu Field will continue to engage all stakeholders in strengthening emergency preparedness and resilience. “We believe that strong collaboration between the company and the community will create a safe and conducive work environment.”
