Pertamina EP Leads National Simultaneous Tree Planting, Restoring 6.3 Hectares of Watershed Areas

MAJALENGKA, 14 January 2025 – Pertamina EP and SKK Migas hosted the National Simultaneous Tree Planting program, an initiative led by the Ministry of Forestry, at Mount Tilu, Girimukti Village, Majalengka, West Java. The event, held in conjunction with ‘National One Million Trees Movement Day’, saw Deputy Minister of Forestry Sulaiman Umar planting 250 fruit trees, joined by key government and industry leaders.

Part of a nationwide rehabilitation effort across 100 locations in 37 provinces, the event in Majalengka was virtually connected to the main ceremony led by Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni in East Nusa Tenggara. Deputy Minister Sulaiman Umar highlighted the initiative as a critical step in restoring 12.7 million hectares of degraded land to support national food, energy, and water security while mitigating climate-related disasters. "This initiative reflects a collective responsibility to restore and protect the environment for future generations. True sustainability requires concrete actions, collaboration, and a long-term commitment to nurturing the trees we plant today."

Pertamina EP’s role in this program aligns with its Watershed (DAS) rehabilitation obligations under the Forest Area Utilization Approval (PPKH) granted by the government. Since 2023, the company has rehabilitated 6.3 hectares of watershed areas, planting 9,942 trees, with a target of 10,718 trees across 23 hectares by 2028.

Pertamina EP President Director Wisnu Hindadari emphasized that tree planting is integrated into the company’s sustainability strategy to reduce carbon emissions and enhance environmental resilience. "Reforestation is not just a corporate responsibility—it is a strategic action to ensure long-term environmental stability while delivering economic benefits to local communities."

The initiative in Girimukti, Majalengka, was conducted entirely by the local community, focusing on productive fruit trees such as mango, petai, avocado, and jackfruit, which provide economic value alongside environmental benefits. To maximize success, Pertamina EP implements: Intensive tree maintenance, including replanting, weed control & fertilization stakeholder-driven monitoring, achieving an 86% success rate over two years. Geo-tagging technology, integrating carbon absorption calculations for real-time monitoring of tree growth and emission reductions.

"By leveraging geo-tagging, we ensure data accountability while providing stakeholders with transparent progress reports on reforestation efforts," said Wisnu. As a key player in sustainable energy development, Pertamina EP continues to balance energy production with environmental stewardship, reinforcing its commitment to a greener future.
