Exploring New Opportunities: Tanzania's State-Owned Energy Company Partners with Pertamina
Bali – As energy demands surge across Africa, nations are seeking new partnerships to secure their energy future. One such collaboration has emerged between Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and PT Pertamina Internasional EP (PIEP), a subsidiary of Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE). This agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in the oil and gas sector and was solidified in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on August 22, 2023.
Through PIEP, Pertamina and TPDC have already commenced joint capability-building programs and upstream block evaluations, with promising opportunities for both upstream and downstream collaboration. The partnership’s MoU was recently extended by one year, as formalized in an amendment signed on August 30, 2024, by Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero). The document exchange took place during the Indonesia-Africa Forum in Bali on September 3, 2024.
Key attendees included TPDC Board Chairman, Ambassador Omben Sefue, the President Director of PIEP, Jaffee Arizon Suardin, and senior officials from Zanzibar and Tanzania. The collaboration between Pertamina and TPDC focuses on knowledge exchange, capacity building, and sustainable energy practices, aligning with global energy transition trends.
"Cooperation in the energy sector will bolster the resilience of both Indonesia and Africa in establishing a robust and interconnected energy network," noted Arya Dwi Paramita, Corporate Secretary of Pertamina's Upstream Subholding. This partnership also paves the way for potential investment opportunities beyond the upstream sector, enhancing Pertamina’s operations across the African continent.
The two companies have already conducted assessments on two promising oil and gas blocks in Tanzania, West Songo-Songo and North Mnazi Bay, and are actively exploring further business opportunities. These collaborations not only contribute to Pertamina’s strategic expansion but also support the goals of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, which guide both companies' sustainable business practices.
Pertamina remains dedicated to sustainable investment, safety, and good governance, having been a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) since 2022. The company also upholds zero tolerance on bribery, implementing the ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) to ensure transparency and ethical practices in all its operations.
With continued innovation and global partnerships, Pertamina Hulu Energi aims to cement its reputation as a world-class oil and gas company, delivering safe, sustainable, and responsible energy solutions.
