Upholding Social and Environmental Responsibility, PHE Group Receives International Award

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, through its Regional and subsidiaries, has earned international recognition at the 16th Global CSR & ESG Summit Awards in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Thursday (25/04).
PHE's active role in sustainable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, has been instrumental in various locations, particularly in its operational areas. The company continues to initiate community empowerment and sustainable environmental management programs. Six awards were bestowed upon the PHE Group, recognizing the achievements of PHE Offshore North-West Java (ONWJ) Regional Java, Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) Regional Kalimantan, PT Pertamina EP Sukowati Field Sukowati Regional Eastern Indonesia, and PT Badak NGL.
The first award, Best Environmental Excellence (GOLD), was granted for the ‘Jam Pasir’ (Preserving Nature through Coastal Community Empowerment) program in Karawang. This initiative integrates environmental and economic activities in the Pasir Putih area, Karawang Regency. PHE ONWJ's innovative ‘Approstraps’ (Alat Penahan dan Peredam Ombak Sedimen Traps) technique has effectively prevented coastal erosion and facilitated the formation of 3.6 hectares of new sedimentation, promoting eco-tourism and creating 25 new Small Medium Enterprises, thereby boosting the local economy.
The Best Community Programme (SILVER) award was given for the "Mpok Tamara" (Empowerment of Vulnerable Waste Picker Groups in North Jakarta) program, which activates waste banks in Kalibaru, North Jakarta by empowering waste pickers. This initiative encourages waste pickers to actively contribute to waste distribution and collection in their communities. The waste pickers benefit economically as the waste collected and sold is saved through the waste bank, enhancing their financial stability.
PHE also secured the Best in Indonesia (GOLD) - Overall Community & Environment Program award for PHE ONWJ’s comprehensive CSR and environmental management programs. Additionally, the Excellent in Provision of Literacy & Education (SILVER) award was received for the Floating Public-School program initiated by Pertamina Hulu Mahakam in 2020. This program addresses high dropout rates in two remote villages, Desa Tani Baru and Desa Sepatin, Anggana District, Kutai Kartanegara, by focusing on educational quality, infrastructure, and solar energy utilization for learning activities.
Another accolade, the Best Community Programme (BRONZE), was awarded for the Antasena Organic Farming Group program in Rahayu Village, Soko District, Tuban, East Java. This program helps 42 farmers convert damaged land into fertile organic farmland using livestock waste and locally available organic materials. This transition has reduced production costs by 40% and increased yields from 4-5 tons per hectare to 7-8 tons per hectare.
Last but foremost, PT Badak NGL, a PHE subsidiary, received the Best Community Programme (PLATINUM) award for the "MENARA MARINA" (Towards Environmentally Friendly, Independent, and Prosperous Fishermen) program. This initiative addresses the significant decline in seaweed harvests and fish catches in Tihi-Tihi Village, Bontang City, by enhancing farming and fishing infrastructure, increasing capacity, educating fishermen's children, and promoting environmental management. The program's eco-friendly seaweed cultivation capsules, made from PT Badak NGL's non-hazardous waste, have significantly reduced production costs for 98 beneficiary families.
One of the award recipients, PHE ONWJ, expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the successful implementation of the company’s programs. "This award is a recognition of our sustainable business practices through CSR and ESG programs that positively impact Indonesia," said Agus Suprijanto, Senior Manager Relations Regional Java, who received the award.
Putra Peni Luhur Wibowo, Manager CSR & Relations Badak LNG, echoed similar sentiments. "Alhamdulillah, Badak LNG has won an international award, a testament to our commitment to ESG principles in our operations," he stated.
Arya Dwi Paramita, Corporate Secretary of PHE, emphasized that this international recognition is a testament to the company's real support for ESG aspects and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "We hope that the awards received by PHE as Pertamina's Upstream Subholding and its subsidiaries will motivate us to continue implementing CSR and ESG principles more effectively and sustainably improve the living standards of communities around our operational areas," Arya added.
