PHR Becomes Indonesia's Largest Oil Producer, Reach 59million Barrels Lifted in 2023

PEKANBARU, 9 January 2024 – PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) has announced a remarkable achievement, lifting approximately 59 million barrels of oil by the end of 2023. This marks a significant increase from the previous year’s figure of 57.3 million barrels, with the final lifting in 2023 averaging a daily production of around 162,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD).
Since the transfer of management of the Rokan Working Area (WK Rokan), PHR has drilled over 1,000 new wells to support national energy resilience. During a recent visit, Benny Lubiantara, Deputy for Exploration, Development, and Management of SKK Migas, praised PHR’s performance in meeting national energy demands, highlighting its status as the leading producer in the country. “We commend PHR for its achievements in 2023 and hope for even greater success in 2024,” Benny stated during his inspection of PHR’s operations in Dumai.
He noted that PHR’s oil and gas activities have been conducted smoothly, reliably, and safely. He expressed hope that 2024 would bring further advancements and improved preparations to support national energy security. “Safety must remain a priority, lifting targets must be met, and the number of wells must increase. Although future challenges are significant, our collaborative efforts will ensure we achieve our goals,” he added.
Rikky Rahmat Firdaus, Head of the SKK Migas Sumbagut Representative Office, also extended his appreciation for PHR WK Rokan’s accomplishments throughout 2023. “SKK Migas values the effective synergy with the Riau Provincial Government, local administrations, security forces, including the police and the military, as well as the judiciary in addressing drilling site preparation challenges,” Rikky said.
“SKK Migas Sumbagut will continue to enhance coordination with the Riau Provincial Government, local districts, and security forces to address operational challenges in 2024 and achieve the targets set for KKKS, particularly PHR WK Rokan,” he continued.
Edwil Suzandi, EVP Upstream Business of PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan WK Rokan, explained that one of PHR’s strategies to maintain production levels this year involved technological innovations aimed at boosting output from WK Rokan’s wells.
“We are diligently working to mitigate the natural decline in production by applying best practices and performance standards in our operations. This effort is crucial for fulfilling national energy needs, and we are proud to be Indonesia's largest oil producer,” Edwil stated.
With an average production achievement in 2023, PHR has contributed over a quarter of the national oil and gas production from the approximately 50,800 hectares of BMN (State-Owned Land) under its management. Edwil elaborated that the 59 million barrels of PHR’s production for 2023 included Sumatran Light Crude and Duri Crude. “All PHR production is directed to Pertamina’s domestic refineries. To support national lifting targets, PHR ensures equipment reliability, personnel readiness, and compliance with safety procedures and regulations, facilitating continuous 24-hour operations for crude oil storage and distribution,” Edwil explained.
In the WK Rokan operations, PHR also collaborates with SKK Migas and PT Kilang Pertamina International (KPI) to ensure that all PHR production in 2023 is lifted and delivered to Pertamina’s refineries. “With dedication and collaboration, we are confident that PHR will continue to make significant contributions to the nation,” Edwil concluded.
