PHE Implements Two Key Exploration Strategies to Strengthen National Energy Resilience
Bandung – As a core player in Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas sector, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, remains steadfast in its commitment to bolster National energy resilience. Through innovative exploration efforts, PHE is positioned to enhance resource discovery, ensuring the long-term growth of the nation's energy supply.
At the outset of 2024, PHE’s exploration operations yielded promising results with significant oil and gas resource discoveries at the Anggrek Violet (AVO)-001 well in South Sumatra, the Astrea (ATR)-001 well in Riau, and the Julang Emas (JLE)-001 well in Central Sulawesi. These findings mark the success of PHE’s two-pronged exploration strategy.
The Director of Exploration at PHE, Muharram Jaya Panguriseng, outlined these strategies during ‘Media Visit and Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding Outbound at Gunung Puntang’, South Bandung, on August 29, 2024. He emphasized that the first strategy focuses on exploring mature areas near existing oil and gas fields using updated exploration concepts and advanced technology, which allows for short-term production gains.
“A prime example is the Astrea (ATR)-001 exploration well in Rokan Hilir, Riau, where the application of the stratigraphic play concept resulted in a production test of 3,064 barrels of oil per day”, said Muharram.
The second strategy targets frontier areas, which, though riskier, offer the potential for substantial resource discoveries, thereby supporting long-term production growth. An illustration of this is the Tedong (TDG)-001 wildcat well in Morowali Utara, Central Sulawesi, where drilling recently revealed indications of a thick hydrocarbon column, a promising sign for future extraction.
PHE’s operations align with Indonesia's Energy Law No. 30 of 2007, focusing on four key areas: Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, and Sustainability. In terms of Availability, PHE prioritizes the discovery of new oil and gas resources to meet national demands. Regarding Accessibility, PHE is expanding energy infrastructure, especially in Eastern Indonesia, to ensure reliable supply across the archipelago.
In line with Acceptability, PHE is committed to maintaining environmental sustainability in all operations. Moreover, its Sustainability focus drives innovation, such as the implementation of Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage (CCUS) and Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) technologies. These projects have already shown promising results, contributing to the energy transition by promoting the use of environmentally friendly gas energy and reducing carbon emissions.
“We are committed to optimizing and integrating our management of energy resources sustainably while advancing decarbonization efforts and environmental preservation,” Muharram affirmed.
PHE’s operations are deeply rooted in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, ensuring compliance with the Ten Universal Principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), of which PHE has been a participant since June 2022. This commitment also extends to Zero Tolerance on Bribery, upheld through the implementation of an ISO 37001:2016-certified Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS).
By adhering to these principles and strategies, PHE is on a clear trajectory to become a world-class oil and gas company, recognized for its environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and commitment to good governance.
