Support for Net Zero Emissions: PHE ONWJ Signs Joint Study Agreement on Carbon Capture, Transportation, and Storage

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North-West Java (PHE ONWJ), under Pertamina's Upstream Subholding – Java Region, has signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) with POSCO International for a feasibility study on Carbon Capture, Transportation, and Storage (CCTS). The signing took place at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (IISF) 2024 at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

This two-year JSA focuses on assessing CO2 storage locations in saline aquifers within the offshore ONWJ working area, with potential expansions into non-producing reservoirs. The ONWJ working area was selected for this study due to its proximity to POSCO International’s Cilegon operations. The study also encompasses CO2 transportation from emission sources to storage sites, the evaluation of suitable carbon capture technologies, and the identification of necessary supporting infrastructure.

In addition to PHE ONWJ, other Pertamina entities, including Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN), and PT Pertamina Power Indonesia (PPI), were involved in signing the agreement.

Muzwir Wiratama, General Manager of PHE ONWJ, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “The signing of this JSA reinforces Pertamina’s commitment to supporting national economic growth while advancing the Indonesian Government’s net zero emissions targets.”

Citing the 2021 United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, Muzwir emphasised that the planet is experiencing unprecedented global temperatures, affecting ecological balance and quality of life across many regions. As part of the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Pertamina is taking proactive measures to combat climate change.

In line with its dual growth strategy, PT Pertamina (Persero) is advancing both energy resilience and the development of low-carbon and renewable energy sectors. This strategy not only supports national economic development but also aligns with sustainability goals.
