Promoting National Self-Reliance Through a Green Economy, PHE Focuses on Developing the CCS/CCUS Business

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, remains committed to promoting national self-reliance through energy self-sufficiency and a green economy. This commitment aligns with PHE’s vision of becoming an energy company that prioritizes energy resilience, availability, and sustainability.

Edi Karyanto, Director of Strategic Planning, Portfolio, and Commercial at PHE, stated that the demands for business decarbonization and carbon offsetting to meet the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060 are part of the global dynamics and represent challenges currently faced by industry players. In conducting its business, PHE implements a dual growth strategy. PHE maximizes its legacy business by increasing upstream production, maintaining baseline output, and investing in production enhancement. The other strategy focuses on developing low-carbon businesses through the advancement of Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture Utilization Storage (CCUS) technologies.

“PHE’s experience in the upstream oil and gas sector is highly relevant for developing the CCS and CCUS businesses in Indonesia,” Edi stated during a webinar titled Exploring the Potential of the CCS/CCUS Business in Indonesia, Tuesday (July 22, 2025).

According to Edi, Indonesia has the potential for carbon emission storage in saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas fields. “Furthermore, due to its geographical location, Indonesia is surrounded by emission-producing countries with NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) targets but without CO₂ storage capacity,” he added.

Edi further explained that PHE plans to develop two CCS hubs and several satellite sites with a combined storage capacity of up to 7.3 gigatons, targeting a 68% emissions reduction from the energy sector by 2060. The development of these CCS hubs and satellites will be carried out in collaboration with several strategic partners.

PHE will continue to invest in managing upstream oil and gas operations and businesses in accordance with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. PHE also remains firmly committed to a Zero Tolerance on Bribery policy by implementing strong fraud prevention measures and ensuring the company remains free from corruption. This includes the implementation of an Anti-Bribery Management System (SMAP), standardized under ISO 37001:2016.
