PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga Sets Record for Deepest Onshore Drilling Using Casing While Drilling Technique in Indonesia
Balikpapan – PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), part of Pertamina's Upstream Subholding in Kalimantan, has set a new record in Indonesia for the deepest onshore drilling using the Casing while Drilling (CwD) technique. The well, SEM-184, located in the Semberah PHSS Working Area, reached a depth of 2,510ft (766m), marking a significant milestone for the oil and gas industry in the country.
The CwD technique involves simultaneous drilling and casing installation, a process designed to streamline operations. Dhanar Eko Prasetyo, Senior Manager of Drilling & Well Intervention for Regional 3 Kalimantan, revealed that PHSS has successfully drilled 84 wells using this technique, achieving substantial savings in both time and cost.
"The application of the CwD technique saved 80 operational hours, equating to a cost reduction of approximately US$120,000. Additionally, this method mitigated risks such as shallow gas and circulation loss, contributing to 7,904 safety man-hours," Dhanar said.
He emphasized PHSS’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement in delivering safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly operations. The company has also implemented dual monobore completion techniques in its wells, further optimizing costs and reducing operational risks.
The dual monobore completion method employs two strings of 3-1/2" diameter tubing cemented to the surface, allowing for hydrocarbon production and workovers without the need for a rig. This contrasts with traditional single-string tubing, which requires rig intervention. "This approach significantly reduces costs and improves operational efficiency," Dhanar explained.
Iva Kurnia Mahardi, Manager of the PHSS Field, highlighted the strategic benefits of these techniques in maintaining the economic viability of projects in Zone 9. "The dual monobore completion method has proven to be both time- and cost-efficient, reducing production risks and carbon emissions, while enhancing workplace safety during well interventions", she said. The method can generate cost savings of up to US$150,000 compared to conventional methods.
PHSS is also implementing a borderless drilling strategy, utilizing 11 rigs simultaneously in areas overlapping with PT Pertamina EP (PEP) fields. This approach maximizes drilling efficiency across shared work areas.
As a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), PHSS manages upstream oil and gas operations in the Sanga Sanga Working Area of East Kalimantan. Upholding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, PHSS collaborates with SKK Migas and other partners to drive innovation and produce safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible energy.
