PHM manages an oil and gas operations area of 3,266.44 km2, which stretches across six ecosystems, namely the lowland forest ecosystem, heath forest ecosystem, swamp forest ecosystem, riparian forest ecosystem, Mahakam Delta mangrove forest ecosystem, and estuary water ecosystem.
Apart from that, PHM also manages a biodiversity protection area in the Balikpapan Botanical Gardens area. Biodiversity management and protection programs that have been implemented include Green Belt in the lowland forest ecosystem and mangrove forest ecosystem of the Mahakam Delta, K-FE Center in the heath forest ecosystem, Kendilo Watershed Rehabilitation in the riparian ecosystem, Superior Coastal Fishermen and Pesut Comics in the estuarine ecosystem, and the Orchidarium Thematic Park in the Balikpapan Botanical Gardens.
